10:00 [10:00] Being Older | Being Elder
Description:
As we age, becoming older, we face particular challenges fears and joys. Are we becoming elders? How are we viewed, holding wisdom or perhaps the opposite? Where do we belong, how do we participate? Facing death, our own, that of those we love. Would you like to meet up and consider Being Older, Being Elder? Sessions led by Cathie Wright, aged 71, who is herself full of questions, and having no answers. Each two hour session will have a particular theme, at the Salisbury Centre using mediation as a way of supporting and deepening the discussion We will start with an Introductory session of one hour, to see if this interests you enough to continue, and then explore the following themes on subsequent weeks. Mind – how are we mentally, what is known about memory processes as we age. Are we as sharp as we once were, are we different in our mental processes. How do feelings impact on us. How do we understand our own ageing process, how do we make meaning of it. Spirit – what is spirit? What is it that matters about spirit, or spirituality or religion or how do we make sense of our lives. Body – is there anyone here who doesn't have a change in bodily function? How do we relate to our ageing bodies. Organ recital is often mocked and yet bodies that are changing and weakening are pretty challenging and consume a good deal of energy in looking after them and coping with changes. Creativity – as we age do we stop being creative? In fact for many of us this is a time of exploring creativity in a away that was not possible when we were working. Creativity in managing change? Death – in Richard Holloway's words this is the last bus. We are looking at the end of our lives, we know we might live for longer, but we know death is coming closer and closer. For many the process of dying is more frightening than the thought of death itself. Lets talk about this. Place in society – Who are we in society. Are we useful, or are we a burden? Can we shape our last years. What do we have to offer the younger generations that come behind us? Do we matter? Introductory session: Thursday 5 October 10:00 -11:00 am Followed by: Weekly Thursdays 10:00 am - 12:00 noon 12, 19, 26 October, 2, 9, 16 November 2017 Cost: min £5.00 per session (If this is not enough to cover the rent of the room I might ask for more.)
